Who makes Singsteady, and how it measures
Singsteady is made by Escape Plan Software Ltd, a small software company registered in England and Wales. We build apps that do one thing well. We built Singsteady because the best thing a singing teacher gives you, honest feedback on every note, wasn't available on the days between lessons.
How we measure pitch
The pitch engine runs in your browser. It analyses the microphone signal about 190 times a second (a YIN-based detector with an octave-tracking stage), then finds the centre of each note you sing, ignoring the first moment while your voice settles and averaging out vibrato.
| Real singing tested | 817 seconds (vocadito dataset, 40 recordings) |
|---|---|
| Median pitch error per frame | 0.87 cents |
| Note averages vs studio analysis | within about 5–8 cents for 95% of notes |
| Octave errors | 0.16% of frames |
| Delay from sound to number | about 60 ms of processing, similar to native apps |
| Notes it reads | E2–C6 |
| “In tune” means | within ±25 cents of the target |
Your device and room matter: a quiet room and a phone or laptop microphone are enough. The piano is the Salamander Grand Piano, a sampled Yamaha C5 by Alexander Holm (CC-BY 3.0; see credits).
